Alton Reese Rawlings, age 89, of Durham, NC, originally from Petersburg, VA, passed away on July 7, 2024, meeting his Lord and Savior.
Al was the proud owner of Little Pig Barbecue in Petersburg, a restaurant started by his father in 1932. Known for his generous spirit, he provided jobs to many and extended kindness by giving meals to the needy. He particularly enjoyed talking with his customers at the Little Pig, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere.
A devoted Christian, Al was a dedicated member of Gill Grove Baptist Church in Chesterfield, VA, where he served as an usher. He loved sports and enjoyed sharing this passion with his sons and grandsons, always engaging in lively discussions about games.
Al married Ruby Jean Meade in 1964 and had three children: Pam Workman, Chris Rawlings (Cheryl), and Tim Rawlings (Tracy). He is also survived by his step-son, Doug Marek; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Lee and Bernice Beville Rawlings; his sister, Doris Rawlings Kvasnicka; and his grandson, Ryan Lee Workman.
The family is especially grateful for the compassionate care provided by his son, Tim Rawlings, in his final years.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Gill Grove Baptist Church, 10726 River Road, Chesterfield, VA. Visitation will precede the service at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow the service at the church’s cemetery.
Al Rawlings will be remembered for his faith, generosity, and love for his family and community. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.
