Gilda Gray Johnson Jones

Gilda Gray Johnson Jones of Richmond, VA passed away on March 16. The daughter of Edgar Hardaway Johnson and Alyce Buckley J. Johnson, she was born in Alberta, VA. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Vaughan Jones (Jaime Cortez) of El Cerrito, CA; a son, Robert Craig Jones (Anne) and granddaughter, Hannah Buckley Jones of Goochland, VA; and a sister, Mary Alyce J. Roberts of San Francisco, CA; and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband, John Robert (Bob) Jones, Jr. and a brother, Edgar Wyles Johnson.

Gilda was a graduate of Alberta High School. She received a BA in Education from Madison College (JMU) and an M.Ed. at VCU, with special reading specialist credentials. Her teaching career took place in Petersburg, Sussex Co., Blacksburg and Henrico Co. After retirement in Goochland, she volunteered in adult literacy, in Goochland Co. schools and in church and community activities.

Gilda was a lover of cats, nature, history, music, reading and working crossword puzzles. She was happiest among friends, pets and family, working in her garden, hearing the birds sing, watching butterflies, listening to music and being a learner and a teacher.

Services will be held on May 3 in Alberta, VA. Gilda’s ashes will be interred with her husband’s Bob Jones at Bethel Church Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. Reception will be at Bethel United Methodist Church at 12:30 p.m. at 45 Church St.
