Thomas James Varner, Jr.

Thomas James Varner, Jr., age 64, of Dolphin, VA passed away March 26, 2020. He is the son of the late Thomas and Rachel Varner. He is survived by his wife, Lois Finch Varner; his step-mother, Diane Varner of Acworth, GA; his sister, Marie Varner of Murraysville, GA; and numerous friends and family. Melvin Neal Jones, Sr. "Billy"

The family of Melvin Neal Jones, Sr. “Billy”, age 86, of Chase City, VA, would like to share the sad news of his passing on March 24, 2020. He is the son of the late Lester and Belle Jones. He is preceded in death by his brother, James Jones and his sister Lilly Eudailey. He leaves behind his loving family, his wife, Virginia B. Jones; his sister, Doris Hutchins and family; his brother-in-law, Francis Eudailey and family; his son, Les Jones (Eileen) and their children Hillary, Eric and Ben; his son, Neal Jones, Jr. and his children, Scot, Joseph, Jessica, Shannon, Jacob and Christopher; his daughter, Sylvia J. Clary and daughter Samantha (Anthony); and his son, Geoffrey Jones (Jessie) and daughter Alexis; and ten great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date. William Thomas Ball, age 85, of Dolphin, VA passed away March 22, 2020. He is the son of the late George and Ruth Ball. He is survived by his wife, Audrey Jackson Ball; their children, Anthony Thomas Ball and wife Margaret, Kenny Wade Ball and wife Sue and Marty Ball Payne and husband Jimmy; his grandchildren, Jamie Ball, Cody Ball, Mary Beth Thomas and Matthew Moss (Mabel); and his brother Robert Ball and wife Iris. A private graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Church Cemetery, Alberta, VA. KING Harley LeAnn King, age 19, of Ebony, VA passed away March 17, 2020. She is preceded in death by her mother, Shonda Stansbury. She is survived by her father and step-mother, John Wayne and Jessica Salmon King; her grandparents, Cliff and Sue King; her grandfather, Jack Stansbury; her grandmothers, Lucy Thomas and Gloria Bedgood; and her siblings, Brianna King Baird, John-John, Coby, and Santana King, and Cassidy, Naomi and Jetta Hegge. A celebration of life will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the Old Store Hunt Club, Brodnax, VA. A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Lake Gaston Christian Life Centre, Ebony, VA. Pamela Henderson Brown

Pamela Henderson Brown, recently of Meredithville, Virginia, passed from this life to join a heavenly choir on March 9, 2020. at the age of 85. She was born in New York City to Boyd and Margaret Henderson, who both preceded her. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate in Latin from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, class of 1956. Pamela was a 50 year choir member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Lawrenceville. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Brown Tompkins. She leaves behind to celebrate her life a husband of 61 years, Sidney E. Brown; a brother, Robin B. Henderson of Richmond; a son, Sidney R. Brown of Atlanta; a daughter, Lindora B. Moran and son-in law, Tom of Corralitos, California; and a son, Boyd H. Brown and daughter-in-law, Ann of Henrico. Her grandchildren are Schuyler Tompkins, Ben Tompkins, Eva Brown, Tali Brown, and Belle Brown. The family appreciates the care that she received at Heritage Hall, Blackstone. A graveside service will be held at New Hope Christian Church, Danieltown, VA at 11 AM on March 14th. Defoy Conley Simpson

Defoy Conley Simpson, 81, of Warfield, VA departed this earthly life at his home on March 4th, 2020. He was born December 1, 1938 and raised in Charlotte, NC. Defoy was an only child of the late Dewitt and Mildred Simpson. After graduation from Harding High School, he enlisted in the US Navy and married Frieda Shore, June 1957, they had two sons Bobby and Rodney. Frieda passed away in 1977 after a long battle with breast cancer. Defoy married Gail Jordan, June 1980. Gail passed away in 2009 of pancreatic cancer. Defoy had two passions other than family and friends. The first one was working for Tindall Corporation. He retired after 34 years of hard work and dedication. He worked all over the Eastern part of the United States. He worked with enthusiasm to accomplish any task that would arise while working on a project. His knowledge and expertise made him a problem solver. And the second one was his love of farming and working the soil. He felt most comfortable in the cab of his tractor. He loved to see his garden grow and loved sharing his harvest with all his neighbors and friends. Survivors include his wife, Moonie; two sons, Bobby (Monica), Rodney (Amanda), stepdaughter, Heidi (Jay) McGinn; grandchildren, Emily Simpson, Hillary (Josh) Montieth, Nick Simpson, Patrick McGinn, Bekah (Sawyer) Peterson, Ryan McGinn and Jeremy Simpson; great grandchildren, Aubrey and Addy Peterson, Lawson and Maddox Montieth; aunts, Sara Yandell and Edith McMillen; lots of cousins and the rest of his family and friends. A memorial service will be held March 14th, 2 pm at the Williams Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, VA. A celebration of life will be held at Jones Community Center following the service. Martha Earline Bowen Matthews, age 91, of Lawrenceville, Va. passed away March 3, 2020. She is the daughter of the late Curtis and Martha Bowen and is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas William Matthews, Sr. of 67 years; and her daughter, Linda Jones. She is survived by her daughter, Judy Egeland and husband Ray; her son, Thomas William Matthews, Jr. and wife Kimberly; her grandchildren, Paula Jones, Marty Lewis (Dave), Melissa Egeland and Michelle Mavis (Tony); her great grandchildren, Haley, Ethan, Hannah, Kylie and Michael; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2020 at Independence United Methodist Church, Emporia, VA with interment in the church cemetery. Mary Elizabeth Conner Hobbs, age 88, of Emporia, Virginia passed away on Friday, February 28, 2020. Born in Brunswick, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John H. Conner and Mary Prickard. She is preceded in death by her son, Joseph Randolph “Randy” Hobbs, Jr. She was best known for her generosity, strong will, and love of pets. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Donna Hobbs; her god son, Brad Phillips (Kenna); her grandchildren, Sonya Lee (Whit) and Nicholas Hobbs; her great grandchildren, Jacob and Charlotte Lee and Riley Hobbs; and her fur baby, Patches. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on March 1, 2020 at Williams Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Virginia. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Linda Jay Taylor Elliott

Linda Jay Taylor Elliott, 79, of Ebony, Virginia, died Tuesday, February 25, after a long illness, at home peacefully with her family. She is the daughter of the late John Garland and Eunice Taylor of Ebony. Ms. Elliott is preceded in death by two brothers, John Garland Taylor Jr. of Lawrenceville, Virginia, and Thomas Anderson Taylor (Sandi Taylor) of Freeman, Virginia. She is survived by two daughters, April Elliott of Virginia Beach and Amy Elliott of Ebony; one brother, Franklin D. Taylor (Connie Taylor) of La Crosse, Virginia; two sisters, Barbara Taylor Mumford (Jimmy Mumford) of Ebony and Kathryn Taylor Clary (John Drew Clary) of Lawrenceville; her closest friend, Rose Baird (Grover Baird) of Blackridge, Virginia; as well as four nieces, three grand-nieces and a grand-nephew. Ms. Elliott was a dedicated employee with Moseley & Nash Well & Septic, LLC, in Blackridge for more than 50 years. She worked with two generations of owners of the business, and considered Andy Nash and her colleagues there to be her treasured second family. The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 29, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville.
