Joseph Herbert “Pete” Shell, Jr., a lifetime resident of Brunswick County, Virginia, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2022, at the age of 91.Born on February 1, 1930, Pete was the son of the late Joseph and Ella Shell of White Plains, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Shell.
Pete’s lifelong calling was to the family farm. After attending Lawrenceville High School, Pete became the third generation of his family to continue the tradition as a dairy farmer on the family farm in White Plains.
He attended Tabernacle Methodist Church for many years. When it closed in 2004, he moved to Philadelphia United Methodist Church in Triplet, where he was a well-loved member.
Pete is remembered by family and friends as a kind-hearted and generous person, who dedicated his life to his favorite things – family, farming, community, and church. In his later life, he enjoyed spending time with his beloved dog and cat and telling stories about life on the farm. He will be greatly missed by many loving cousins, extended family, neighbors, and friends.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped Pete through his final days, especially the staff at Greensville Health and Rehabilitation Center in Emporia, Virginia, and Kindred Hospice.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 27, 2022 at Philadelphia United Methodist Church, 6072 Triplet Road, Lawrenceville, VA 23868. Viewing hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at Williams Funeral Home in Lawrenceville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Philadelphia United Methodist Church, c/o Gay Taylor, 14179 Dry Bread Road, Emporia, VA 23847.
