Joseph Leroy Powell, Sr.

Joseph Leroy Powell, Sr., age 78, of Freeman, VA passed away October 22, 2017. Leroy was the President of Powell Wood Products, Inc., a local trucking company. He is a former member of Brunswick Academy Executive Board of Directors and has been a trustee and chairman of the Board of Deacons of Reedy Creek Baptist Church for 48 years where he also was a co-teacher in the Nursery Department for over 40 years.. Leroy was an avid hunter and member of the Reedy Creek Hunt Club. He was a charter and life member of Brunswick Volunteer Rescue Squad and former manager of W.R. Ezell Lumber Co., Lawrenceville for 26 years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Moses Powell, Sr. and Sallie Ingram Powell; his brother, Moses Powell, Jr.; and his sister, Elizabeth P. Harris. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Edith Clary Powell; his son, Joseph L. “Joey” Powell, Jr. and wife Vicky B. Powell; his sister, Christine L. Mathias and husband Mack; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville with interment at Reedy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Freeman, Va.
