Joseph Peter Bittman of White Plains passed away Monday, November 4, 2019, at MCV-VCU after a well-lived life of 81 years. He was born September 25, 1938 in Nutley, New Jersey to Joseph and Marie Bittman. From 1960 to 1966 Joseph served as a SPEC4-supply clerk in the Army/New Jersey National Guard. He graduated in the class of 1960 from the National Agriculture College/Delaware Valley College with a major in dairy husbandry. Joe continued his lifelong passion for farming, milking cows, working draft horses, raising animals, growing crops, and pursuing a simpler way of life, first in New Jersey and New York followed by over 45 years in Virginia. Working for Brunswick County as a truck driver, rounded out his days. He also served the community for over ten years on the Southside Community Service Board.
Joseph’s parents preceded him in death. Survivors include his son, Matthew, his sister Rita Carey of Whiting, NJ, two nieces Anne Carey of Whiting, NJ and Patty Johnstone of Wantage, NJ, several nieces and nephews, two adopted children, and two grandchildren. He also leaves friends he gathered along the way, who became family by choice.
A memorial service will be held at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Southside Community Services Board, P. O. Box 713, Lawrenceville, VA 23868 or a charity of choice. Burial will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, NJ at a later date.
