Mary Frances Robertson Jones, age 95, of Lawrenceville, Virginia passed away August 16, 2023. Mary was born in Halifax County, NC to the late George W. Robertson and Matilda Forest Collier Robertson.
She is preceded in death by her husband Clyde Atkinson Jones; her son, Steve Atkinson Jones; her siblings, Thelma Picot Tippett, William Gray Robertson, Tillman Herbert Robertson, George Washington Robertson, Charles Preston Robertson, Dan Shelton Robertson, Annie Lucille Reese and Jerry Wayne Robertson. She is survived by her last living sibling, Justine Robertson Piper of Raleigh, and her sister-in-law Patsy Robertson of Roanoke Rapids.
Mary graduated from Aurelian Springs High School in 1945. She then attended East Carolina College in Greenville NC, which later became East Carolina University, and graduated in 1951. She started her public school teaching career in 1951, in Halifax County. Mary then moved to Brunswick County in 1953 to teach at Lawrenceville High School, and then in 1955 began teaching at Brunswick High School. She served for 34 years as a teacher in Brunswick County. She taught English, Journalism and Business; and so many remember her as their typing and shorthand teacher. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honorary society for women educators. She retired from teaching in 1988.
Mary was baptized at Bear Swamp Baptist Church in Halifax County, NC, her family church, but after marrying Clyde Jones and moving to Virginia, she became active at the Antioch Christian Church, where she served as organist, Sunday School teacher, church historian, and in many other supportive ways. She was forever a faithful witness to Jesus Christ and deeply devoted to Antioch.
Mary was looked after in her later years by her pastor, the Rev. Mark W. Wethington, and his wife, Beth, as well as by her devoted niece Judy Taylor. She lived the last five years of her life at Lawrenceville Nursing and Rehabilitation (formerly Envoy) where she was taken well care of.
The family will receive friends Saturday, August 19, 2023 at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, VA, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. followed by a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, Lawrenceville, VA. A memorial service for Mary will be held at a later date at Antioch Christian Church. Memorial donations can be made to Antioch Christian Church and mailed to PO Box 251, Gasburg, VA 23857.
