Nancy Birdsall Bain, age 90, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2024. She was born on May 21, 1934, in Dinwiddie, Virginia, to Orion Lewis and Sarah Pauline Hawkes Birdsall. She was a lifelong resident of Dinwiddie County, learning how to farm and play the piano at a young age. She followed in her mother’s footsteps and graduated from Longwood University before beginning her career at Fort Lee in 1953. She truly enjoyed playing the piano at home and in multiple churches in the county, starting at Smiths Grove United Methodist Church and later as a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church. She worked as a civilian employee at Fort Lee for 62 years. She excelled in her persistent drive to improve the lives of soldiers and their families throughout her career. Her roles included Personnel Services Officer, Director of Army and Community Services, and the Vice President for Administration with the Army Quartermaster Foundation. Nancy earned many awards over her distinguished career and in 2014, she was inducted into the Quartermaster Hall of Fame. Additionally, she received The Curry Humanitarian Alumni Award for her Distinguished Service to Others from Longwood University. She was humble and kind to all, and dedicated her life to God, her family, friends, and improving the lives of those in need. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 63 years, Warren Carney Bain; her son, Preston Carney Bain II; and her brother, Orion Lewis Birdsall Jr. She is survived by her son, Warren “Chip” Birdsall Bain (Cindy); her daughter, Sara Lynn Bain; her grandchildren, Jessica Elmore (Jon), Jacob Bain (Tina), Hatcher Bain, Carson Bain, Jazlyn Bain (Daniel), Jae Bain, Lindsay Johnson (Thad), Daniel Bain (Christina); and eleven great-grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered by her sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Carter and Peggy Bain; nieces, Carole Gwen Carter and Anna Birdsall Prieto (Terry); and many other cousins, extended family members, and close friends. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the dedicated teams of Duke Health’s Raleigh Hospital, Home Health and Hospice, and Hock Family Pavilion.
