On Saturday, September 16, 2023, Thomas Edward “Tommy” Moore gained his wings, joining his wife, Rebecca LaVonne Powell, whom he missed dearly. He was born May 30, 1946, in South Brunswick, VA, to his parents, Bennie Givens Moore and Agnes Elizabeth Clary. He lived most of his life between Gasburg and Ebony.
Tommy worked for Magnolia/USCO Trailer Manufacturing Co. for many years as well as Moseley & Nash Well Drilling and Fox Run Water Co. until his retirement. He got a lot of enjoyment out of going to fox dog hunts and Buddy’s fox pen to run his Walkers with his grandson, James. On other days, riding his red S-10 to the convenience center to sit and talk to his grandson, Michael. Some days driving to Ebony General to talk to folks coming in, but for sure he wasn’t leaving without a snack or two for his great-granddaughter, My’Asiya. One thing is for sure; if you saw that red S-10 coming, it was Tommy and you didn’t know what story from the old days you would hear, but you were guaranteed to be laughing when he left. He often talked about his days at old Gholsonville School, the old dance hall, ones in the community and the mischief they got into as kids, and even the goat he once rode to the store. One thing is for sure, when you heard the name Tommy Moore, you thought of sausage. Many days he spoke of his cousin, Tommy, and making sausage. They were known as Big Tommy and Little Tommy. Come fall and winter you knew it was sausage time.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his daughter, Lisa, his siblings, Willie Moore, Eleanor Bowman, and Burton Moore, and many other relatives.
He is survived by his son, Timothy E. Moore and wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Moore; grandsons, Michael Moore (Keisha) and James Moore (Paisley); a great-granddaughter, My’Asiya Moore all of Ebony; sisters, Dorothy Melton of Ringgold, VA, and Julia Clary of Gasburg, as well as many nieces, nephews, church family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Ebony Volunteer Fire Department. Officiating will be Pastor Joseph Hanel. The burial will be private.
