Willard Earl Pulley

Willard Earl Pulley was called to his eternal resting home on Friday, December 18, 2020 at Envoy of Lawrenceville at the age of 94. Affectionately known as “Weto,” he was born on May 18, 1926 to the late Fed and Anna M. Pulley in Brunswick Co., Virginia and was the 4th of 12 children. Willard relocated with his family to Dinwiddie Co. where he attended Dinwiddie Public Co. Schools until he went to work on a farm to help provide for his family. At a young age, Willard joined Rocky Mount Baptist Church in McKenney, VA. Willard enlisted in the United States Army in 1944 then was drafted on January 13, 1946 during World War II as a Private First Class for the Panama Canal Department. After 6 years of service, he moved back to Brunswick Co. a place he called home for the remainder of his life. Weto was a hardworking man that was a long-distance truck driver for Butler Lumber Company until he retired after 25 years, worked on cars, loved to hunt, and was a farmer at trade. He was an avid gambler that enjoyed playing poker and you could always catch him at Mayfield Pool Hall on Friday and Saturday nights. Willard was married the late Carrie “Mallissie” Hubbard on February 1, 1976. Weto was a man that spoke his mind, there was never a dull moment with him, he was a great friend, he always had great stories to tell, and he was a fun-loving man that enjoyed life. You could always find him at Hardee’s every morning chatting with his McGuire buddies about various topics. His favorite line was “when I die, there’s going to be a line of cars all the way to Emporia full of women crying Sweet Daddy is Gone”! He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers John, Fred, Rochester, Stephen, Acrea, James Pulley, and sister Mattie Jones. Left to spread his legacy, one son John of Lynchburg, VA; two daughters Brenda of Gladys, VA and Natasha Hardy of Chesapeake, VA; three grandchildren Kionne, Tiana and Briana Pulley of Lynchburg, VA; a special step-grandchild Sonia Jackson of Lynchburg, VA; three sisters, Agnes Thorne, Bernice Harvell, Susie Allen; and one brother Eddie Pulley (Pearl); a special friend Joan Rainey, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Our family was deeply saddened to learn that our cousin, Willard Earl Pulley had passed! We last saw him at a family reunion at the Dillards. It was as if no time had passed at all! Cousin "Weto" always seemed to show up at the right moment with the right suggestion or solution to a problem. If we needed him he was there! I admired the fact that he always "spoke his mind" and told you his opinion straight up! Whether he agreed with you or not, he always had our back. It is rare to have someone in your corner like this..let alone from childhood through adulthood! We learned a lot from him! We will miss him dearly! He loved us and we loved him.He was great cousin!

May God bless all of his family and friends. He was one of my dad's favorite cousins.
