Donald Edward Rountree, Jr.

Donald Edward Rountree, Jr., 80, of Henrico, NC, (and previously of Franklin, VA) departed this life and went to his Heavenly Home on Thursday, July 30, 2020. He was born on March 8, 1940, in Franklin, VA. Don was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Johnson Rountree, and his father, Donald Edward Rountree, Sr., both of Franklin, VA. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 60 years, Jane Cook Rountree, of Henrico, NC; two children, Karen Rountree Kane (Patrick) of Ashland, VA, and Kevin Donald Rountree of Henrico, NC; three granddaughters, Kara Kane, Keri Kane, and Kora Kane of Ashland, VA; and a sister, Dianne Rountree (Earl Franzo) of Florida. Don was a graduate of Southampton High School in 1959 and of Chowan College in 1961. He served six years in the Virginia Army National Guard. Don was an active member of Pleasant Hill Christian Church in Gasburg, VA, and loved his church family. He served both as a Deacon and an Elder. He retired from Union Camp Corporation in Franklin, VA, as a Supervisor in the Pulp Mill after 37 years. The family would like to thank Magnolias of Chesterfield in Chester, VA, for the care that they gave him for the last two years. A graveside service will be held at Pleasant Hill Christian Church in Gasburg, VA, on Saturday, August 8, at 11:00 a.m. To uphold safety guidelines, all guests are asked to wear a mask and respect social distancing requirements. Ola Mae Parks Draper

Ola Mae Parks Draper died on July 27, 2020 at the age of 91. Mae is survived by her children, Brenda Byrum (Joe) of Margarettesville, NC, Donna Newsome (Glenn) of Huntington, WV, and Calvin Draper (Betsy) of Emporia, VA, ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Bennie Burton Moore

Bennie Burton Moore, age 72, of Gasburg, VA, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2020. A lifelong resident of Brunswick County, he was the son of the late Bennie Givens and Agnes Clary Moore. He was also preceded in death by a son, Bennie Burton “Buddy” Moore, Jr., a sister, Eleanor M. Bowman, and a brother, Willie G. Moore. He is survived by his children, Adam Moore and Christina Moore; grandchildren, Adam Moore, Jr. and Addison Moore; sisters, Julia M. Clary and Dorothy M. Melton; a brother, Tommy Moore; his best friend and caregiver, Kathy Wray, as well as his beloved pets, Frankie, Molly, Bella, and Lou Lou. Burton was a mechanic his entire life and the retired owner of Burton’s Repair Service in Gasburg, VA. He loved cooking, eating with his family and friends, cookouts, and fishing. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2020 at Williams Funeral Home & Crematory, Lawrenceville, VA. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Hill Christian Church Cemetery, Gasburg, VA. Annie Lee Davis Bowen

Beloved wife and mother, Ann passed away on July 11, 2020. Born October 3, 1927, Ann was the daughter of McClellan and Bettie Davis of Alberta, Virginia. She was married to her devoted husband, Willie Lee Bowen, Jr (Bill) for fifty-eight years. Together they raised a son, Bobbie Glenn Bowen and a daughter, Ava Ruth Bowen in a home that they built from the land. Karen, Debbie, and Jim Winn joined their family in 1972. Ann is blessed with two granddaughters, Erin Sarduy, and Sarah Moore and six great-grandchildren, Gavin and Josiah Sarduy, Kaleb Eaker, Lydia and Naomi Posey, and Justice Nelson. Ann is predeceased by her husband, Bill, brothers, Richard, Howard, and Ott Davis, sister, Jane Paige, and Debbie Winn. She is survived by her sister, Emily Steed and sisters-in-law Betty Davis, Jean Davis, and Polly Clary. A longstanding member of Trinity St-Marks Episcopal Church, Ann enjoyed spending time with her church members, her family, and friends. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening, and sewing, especially handmade quilts. Visitation with the family will be held at Williams Funeral Home on Saturday, July 18 at 1:00 pm. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm with interment at Crestview Memorial Park. We ask that everyone attending practice safety measures due to the Corona Virus. Please wear a face mask, use hand sanitizer, and stay at least 6 feet apart at all times. Barbara Mohn

Barbara Mohn, age 79, of Ford, Virginia, passed away Saturday, July 11, 2020. Barbara was born on September 21, 1940 in Petersburg, VA to Maggie & Charlie Seymour. Barbara had a life long passion for writing. She wrote stories, songs and poems; many that were published in the Progress Index. She also worked many years on her family tree. Barbara had a love for music and singing with her siblings. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Maggie & Charlie Seymour; husband, Richard Mohn, Sr; siblings, Fritzi, Joyce, Tootie and Randy. Barbara is survived by her children, Ricky Mohn (Crystal), Dewane Mohn (Babette), Butch Mohn (Melissa); four grandchildren, Ricky, Danielle, Katelinn and Kevin, four great-grandchildren; siblings, Ernestine (Poppy) Garrett, Dorothy Jordan and Mike Seymour as well as many nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, VA. Mary Elizabeth Watkins

Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Watkins passed away at the age of 82, on July 3, 2020 in Rocky Mount, NC. She grew up in Lawrenceville, Virginia. Lizzie is the daughter of the late Robert Samuel Watkins Jr. & Elizabeth Fleming Watkins of Lawrenceville. Lizzie attended college at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Virginia, and held a career in social work, residing in Florida, Alaska, and North Carolina. Lizzie will be remembered for her love and dedication to raising champion show Dobermans, her service in the social working field, and her love of NC barbecue. Lizzie was predeceased by first husband, Don L. Frazier, and second husband, Anthony J. Horniblow. She is survived by 2 daughters, 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. A private ceremony was held by family, with burial entrusted to Williams Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, VA.

Joseph Wayne Grimsley, Jr.

Joseph Wayne Grimsley, Jr., age 56, of Chesapeake, VA, died suddenly on Wednesday, July 8, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Wayne and Linda Cravotta Grimsley, and his mother-in-law, Elsie Buckner Clary. Wayne is survived by his wife, Rhonda Clary Yates Grimsley; sisters, Julie Grimsley Perry of Zebulon, NC and Christy Grimsley Broughton (Eddie) of Wendell, NC; father-in-law, Smithy Clary of Lawrenceville, VA; sister-in-law, Andrea Clary Walker (Will) of Willow Springs, NC, as well as several nieces and nephews. Wayne grew up in Raleigh, NC and remained in the area attending college at UNC Chapel Hill where he received his Bachelors in Journalism and his Masters in History at NC State University. Wayne loved drawing, reading, writing, the Braves and politics. He was very active with the Democratic Party throughout his life. He began his career as a reporter and a desktop publisher, and after receiving his PhD at Mississippi State University in History, he became the head of the History Department at Halifax Community College and then finally moved to Tidewater Community College in Virginia where he was currently teaching American history. His writings include a biography James B. Hunt: A North Carolina Progressive, McFarland that was published in 2003. He met and married his soul mate and wife Rhonda and they lived happily in Chesapeake, Virginia for 14 years. They loved to travel, watch old movies, read and spend time with their family and their cats. Wayne was a loving and passionate husband, son, brother, friend and colleague that will be missed terribly. He was taken from us too soon. William A. Hudson

William A. Hudson, age 79, of Lawrenceville, VA, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 5, 2020 while surrounded by his loving family. Born in Columbia, NC, he was the son of the late Arvin Washington and Winifred Swain Hudson. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Rufus Hudson. Bill’s early working years were in construction. He worked on many large projects all over Virginia including the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. In 1963, Bill joined the Virginia State Police as a State Trooper and was stationed in Fredericksburg, VA when President Kennedy was assassinated. He transferred to Brunswick County in 1967 and became an active and well-respected member of the community. In December of 1971, Bill began employment with Parker Oil Company, Inc. as General Manager and retired in 2009. Bill was a man of many loves and talents, including gardening, wood-working, and visiting the beach, but above all else was a loving and devoted family man. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Beverly Rose Hudson; daughters, Leslie Hudson Daniel (Jeffries) and Shelly Hudson-Baker (Reggie); grandchildren, Miles Jason Brockwell and Beverly Jordan Baker; a sister, Sandra Hudson Nixon, as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at Williams Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, VA. The family will receive friends following the service. Vivian Irene Humphreys

Vivian Irene “Rene” Humphreys, age 88, a lifelong resident of Freeman, VA, passed away Friday, July 3, 2020. The daughter of the late William Otis and Ruby Mae Simms Powell, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Lee Humphreys, and a sister, Kathleen Powell Daniel. She will be remembered as a devoted caregiver, having cared for several of her family members in their final days. Mrs. Humphreys is survived by a nephew, Dale Daniel as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Earl Woodrow Washburn

Earl Woodrow Washburn, 96, of Lawrenceville, VA, passed away June 30, 2020. Earl was born December 20, 1923. He was a deputy sheriff for 39 years with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and retired in 1988 as Captain. He is predeceased by his wife of 73 years, Minnie Clarke Washburn; his parents, Fletcher C. Washburn and Janie W. Washburn; his brothers, Clyde, Clarence, Jesse, and Grady; and his sisters, Myrtle Fackler, Emma Sue Roberts, and Janie Brown. Earl, our father and our Papa, will be lovingly remembered and missed by his four children, Everett Earl and wife Robbie, Keith and wife Judy, June Love, and Kent and wife Beverly; his ten grandchildren, Amanda, Heather (Iain), Daniel (Dawn), Wilson (Brandi), Julie, Shanna, Alicia, Everett (Christy), Laura (Chris), and Collin; 14 great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Blake, Nelia, Gracie, Luke, Jack, Sean, Grant, Aubreigh, Carson, Carter, Myles, Everett III, and Lawson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
