Sara Jane Clary

Sara Jane Clary, born November 24, 1953, died September 26, 2020 from a long battle with Small Cell Lung Cancer. She is preceded in death her mother, Gladys Louise King Clary, father, Willie Ross Clary, a brother, Larry Ross, and three nephews. She is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Renee and husband Thomas W. Matthews Jr.; a son, Warren H. Currin III; a granddaughter, Cassie Mae and grandson, Austin James; siblings, Walter (Dick) Clary and wife Diane; and a sister Carolyn Clary. Also surviving are nieces, Meagan Clary, Kelley (Cory Newcomb), Barbara Jean Clary, and Pamela Davis; nephews, Willie Clary (Jessica) and Brett Clary; great-nieces, Madison Clary, Ava Clary, Kylie Newcomb; great-nephew, Alex Clary, as well as numerous other family members and a special friend, Delores. A very special thank you to Monty Raney, Beth Raney, Scarlett and Cameron. A private service will be held. In lieu of flowers we would like you to wear something yellow and think of mama’s huge smile and how she loved life because she wanted this to be a celebration of her life.

Darnell Whitby Long

Darnell Whitby Long, age 96, of South Brunswick, VA, passed away Friday, September 25, 2020. She was a beloved mother, sister, aunt, and “Grandma.” She was preceded in death by her parents, Jenner and Ida Clary Whitby, husband, Edward G. Long, Sr., two sisters, Doma Allison and Annie Clary. She is survived by a son, Edward G. Long, Jr. and wife, Kelly, of Grandy, NC, a granddaughter, Lyndsey Ball (John) of Lafayette, LA, and a grandson, Andrew Long (Katie) of Danville, VA, two nephews, two nieces, and a devoted friend and caregiver, Linda Singleton. Mrs. Long retired from a teaching career in 1984, after 36 years at Brunswick Senior High School. She was an active member of Matthews Chapel United Methodist Church. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at Matthews Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Jane Thomas Riegel

Mrs. Jane Thomas Roberts Riegel went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 7, 2020. Jane was born January 5, 1937 to the late Price McGuire Thomas and Ruth Rebecca Harris Bryant. Jane was preceded in death by her husbands, Alvin “Hambone” Roberts and Franklin S. “Egg” Riegel, her daughter Becky Tuma and her sister Helen Moore. Jane was a retiree of the Brunswick County Department of Social Services and a loyal member of Edgerton United Methodist Church. Jane is survived by her children, Cheri Parnell (Dennis), Conway Inge (David), Malcolm Lucy (Melissa), Chris Lucy and Alvin Glenn Roberts, step-daughter Mary Caldwell. Jane is also survived by her great-grandson, Christopher Lucy who resided at the home. Jane is survived by her brother, Price McGuire Thomas, Jr. (Gale), 15 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Jane’s caregivers and special friends include Betty Coleman, Ben Caldwell and Carol Baird. Jane’s memorial celebration will be held at Edgerton United Methodist church on Saturday, September 26, 2020, visitation will be from 1 to 2pm, service at 2pm. Sandra Clary Griffin

Sandra Clary Griffin, age 67, of Bracey, Virginia, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2020. Born on November 10, 1952 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, she was the daughter of the late John Keith and Claudine Havens Clary of Blackstone, VA. Sandra was a retired teller of Citizens Bank & Trust. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. Sandra is survived by her son, David Shawn Lucy (Crystal); daughters, Shannon Ivey (the late Will) and Crystal Raynor (Anthony); eight grandchildren, Jasmine, Haley, Isaiah, Jesse, Kristen, Wyatt, Liam, and Trinity; her sister, JoAnn Miles (Curtis); and her best friend, Teri Widmer (Eric). A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 20, 2020 at Williams Funeral Home & Crematory in Lawrenceville, VA. The family will greet friends following the service. Shirley Curran Webster Wray

Shirley Curran Webster Wray, age 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at Petersburg Homes for Ladies. She was born on November 26, 1929 in Bluefield, West Virginia. Shirley was a beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Shirley is predeceased by her husband, Hubert Ingram Webster whom she married on April 20, 1946 and her late-in-life-love, Maclin Wray, whom she married on May 15, 2004. Throughout her life, Shirley loved her church and her church family. She was a member of Warfield Baptist, then Dolphin Baptist and her last church, Asbury Memorial United Methodist. She was a very strong Christian with very strong ethics and a true Southern lady. Shirley treasured her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her siblings, Joyce King, Nancy Cook (deceased), Dana Stewart and Curtis Tweedy (deceased) all of whom held a huge place in her heart. Shirley is lovingly remembered by her three children, Betty Sue Cohen, Kenneth Webster, and Richard Webster; their spouses, Ken Cohen, Sheila Webster, Carol Webster; her grandchildren, Kevin Webster, Kari Widener, Elizabeth Majewski, Rebecca Ball, and Adam Cohen; their spouses, Meredith Webster, Ricky Majewski, and Casey Ball; great-grandchildren, Cole Webster, Blake Webster, Liam Widener, Evan Widener, Addison Ball and Avery Ball; her step-children, Briggs Wray, Dr. Ronald Wray, Katherine Wray, and Kim Dailey. Donald Franklin Thomas

Donald Franklin Thomas, 82, of Lawrenceville, VA, passed away Friday, September 4, 2020. A lifelong resident of Brunswick County, he was the son of the late Maria Short Thomas and Otis Alexander Thomas. He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Wilbur, Buck, JC “Red,” Dick, and Billy; and seven sisters, Mary, Velma, Nellie, Ruth, Ella, Lorene, and Ann. Donald was a life member of Liberty Church and Brunswick Volunteer Rescue Squad, and a former Board member of Virginia Agricultural Growers Association. A lifelong tobacco farmer of Brightleaf Farm in Lawrenceville, VA, he was an avid NASCAR fan, attending many races throughout his life along with his brother, Marvin, and many friends. He was recognized by many fertilizer and chemical dealers, and was always introduced to them by his friend, Mallory Lafoon, as the “Best” tobacco farmer in Brunswick County. Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Patsy Thomas; sons, Donny Thomas (Joyce), Mike Thomas (Abbe), and Barry Thomas (Janet); brothers, Marvin and Ran; sister, Mattie; grandchildren, Lyndsay Buchanan (Jason), Danny Thomas (Brittany), Justin Thomas (Bri), and J.R. Thomas; great-grandchildren, Faith Buchanan, Kaye Lee Buchanan, Lee Ann Thomas, and Aerin Thomas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 6, 2020 at Williams Funeral Home & Crematory in Lawrenceville. The family will greet friends following the service. Donald Earl Gede

Donald Earl Gede of McKenney, Virginia, formerly of Bowie, Maryland died on August 30, 2020, just after his 92nd birthday. Don was born in Deerfield, Illinois to Rudolph and Bessie Gede and was the third of six children. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his first wife, Joy Tanis Gede; a daughter, Joanne Gede; a son, Stephen Gede; a step-son, Blakley Hubbard; and three brothers, Robert, Jack, and Bill. He is survived by his wife, Lola K. Gede; a son, Christopher D. Gede (Ellen) of Bowie Maryland; a daughter, Donna Garrett (Steve) of Richmond, Virginia; one grandson Christopher F. Gede; brother, James Gede (Mary); sister, Betty Willis, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Lola’s family, to include a step-son, Anthony Hubbard (Mary); step-daughter-in-law, Marie Baugh (Kim); step-grandchildren, Matthew Hubbard (Tess), Jennifer Clary, Erin Hubbard, Christin Litchfield (Trey), and Ryan Hubbard; step-great-grandchildren, Blakely Clary, Nathan Hubbard, Caleb Litchfield, and Tristin Litchfield who Don affectionately called “Gorgeous.” Don served in both the Navy and Air Force for 29 years, and was a World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veteran, retiring with rank of Master Sergeant. He worked and retired from the C&P Telephone Company in Washington, DC. Don also served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and enjoyed boating, once owning a boat named Don's Joy. Don lived in Bowie Maryland from 1971-1988, and retired to Florida, and then to Richmond and McKenney, Virginia, in his later years. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Virginia. A service with military funeral honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2020 at Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, Virginia. Louise Whitby Clary

Louise Whitby Clary, 87, of Lawrenceville, VA, widow of Thurston Chester Clary, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2020. A lifelong resident of Brunswick County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Peebles and Jenny Mae Wilson Whitby, and was also preceded in death by nine of her siblings and many nieces and nephews. She is survived by her children, Randall Clary (Linda), Teresa Volosevich (Steve), and Keith Clary (Sandy), eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, three brothers, as well as many extended family members, loving friends, and devoted caregivers. A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 23, 2020 in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home followed by interment at Rock United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Gene C. Tatum

Rev. Gene C. Tatum, 73, of Amelia, VA, died August 19, 2020. He was a native of Dinwiddie County, the only son of the late James F. and Cecil Chappell Tatum. He entered the ministry at the age of 20. Appointments served include Surry, Associate at Washington Street Petersburg, Cartersville, Burkeville, Waverly, Amelia, Woods, and Ocran. During his 16 years at Ocran, the plans for the new church were developed and the church was built and paid for. When he retired in 2009, he had served 42.75 years in the ministry. In retirement, he served the West Dinwiddie Charge for 3½ years and then filled in for ministers when needed as long as his health allowed. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 24 years, Mary Nell Blanton Tatum of Amelia and a cousin, who was like a brother, Thomas W. “Tom” Chappell of Dinwiddie. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Southlawn Memorial Park with The Rev. Tim Beck officiating. Margaret Green Driskill

Margaret Green Driskill, 84, of DeWitt, VA, loving Wife, Mother and Nana, passed away Saturday, August 15, 2020 at her home. A lifelong resident of Dinwiddie County, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Alice Clay Green. She was also preceded in death by her son, William L. Driskill, Jr., and her brother, Billy Green. Margaret was a 1956 graduate of Alexandria School of Nursing. Her career as a registered nurse spanned more than 40 years, including service at Petersburg General Hospital, Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company, and Hiram Davis Medical Center. She was an active member, Elder, and pianist at Bott Memorial Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, William Louis Driskill; daughters, Vicki Bridgeman (Dennis) and Susan Parrish (Chuck); daughter-in-law, Terri Driskill; grandchildren, Chip Parrish (Taylor), Ryan Parrish (Melba Dale), Ashley Perkinson (Brad), Kellie Bridgeman, Grayson Driskill, Tyler Parrish, Daniel Bridgeman, Madison Martin (Josh), and Will Driskill, as well as nine great-grandchildren. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2020 in the cemetery at Bott Memorial Presbyterian Church.
