Alvin Lear Lucy

Alvin Lear Lucy, age 91, of Dolphin, VA passed away January 20, 2019. He is the son of the late Elbert and Grace Lucy. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and a Brunswick Stew Master. He was also a member of the Central Ruritan Club for years. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jane Johnson Lucy; his son, Alvin Earl Lucy; Baby Boy Lucy; his son-in-law, Freddie Reekes; and his brother, Harold Lucy. He is survived by his daughter, Peggy L. Reekes; his son, Michael Lucy and wife Susan; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and his brother, Carlton Lucy. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville with interment at Liberty Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home. Woodrow "Chuck" Wilson Spence

Woodrow “Chuck” Wilson Spence, age 81, of Lawrenceville, VA passed away January 14, 2019. He is the son of the late John and Irene Spence and is one of their ten children. He is survived by his loving wife, Rae Bishop Spence; his daughters, Stephanie Puckett and husband Randall and Pam Miles and husband Chris; his grandchildren, Katelyn Wendland, Austin Wendland, Sam Puckett and Spence Puckett; his great grandchildren, Sophia and Maddox Kidd; his sisters, Dorothy Hall and Barbara Harris; and his brother, Wayne Spence. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Home with interment at Oakwood Park Cemetery, Lawrenceville, VA. Robert "Bobby" Clinton Clary, Sr.

Robert Clinton Clary, Sr., Ed.D., 87, died January 12, 2019. Dr. Clary was born on April 6, 1931, on the family farm in his beloved Valentines, Virginia, and resided there most of his life. A career educator, he began his education in a one-room school in Valentines and graduated from the University of Virginia (undergraduate school) and the University of North Carolina (graduate school). He served as Mathematics Supervisor for the City of Richmond, Mathematics Supervisor for the State Board of Education of North Carolina, and at his retirement in 1989 was School Superintendent for the Roanoke Rapids North Carolina Graded School District. Dr. Clary is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Lucy; his son and daughter-in-law, Clint and Lorrie Clary; his daughter and son-in -law, Mary Lynn and Dan Tanner; and his grandchildren, Morgan Clary, Jeffrey Raper, Justin Raper, Trey Tanner, and Will Tanner. He was predeceased by an infant son, William Rivers Clary, and a granddaughter, Meredith Tanner Smith. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Lawrenceville on January 26, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the family home in Valentines after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in honor of Dr. Clary.

POWELL Carolyn Elizabeth Powell, age 73, of Petersburg, VA passed away January 13, 2019. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, William E. and Flora Powell and her mother, Dorothy Powell Vaughan. She is survived by her children, Kevin Powell and wife Elois, Katina Powell and Jason Powell; and her grandchildren, Kristoffer and Kirsten Powell. A private memorial service will be held. Donovan Joseph Kendus

Donovan Joseph Kendus, age 16, of Alberta, VA, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019. Born in Newark, DE on March 10, 2002, Donovan was the son of Karen (Figgatt) Kendus and Brian J. Kendus. He was a junior at Dinwiddie High School in Dinwiddie, VA. Spending time in Delaware and Virginia, Donovan lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed fishing, playing football, visiting the beach, playing PlayStation, and rocking out to his iTunes playlist. As a true fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Donovan loved watching games with his family and was elated to see the Birds win it all in 2018. Donovan’s Dodge truck was his pride and joy. Most importantly, he loved his family and friends and was always willing to be there for them. Donovan is survived by his mother, Karen (Figgatt) Kendus and her fiancé Timothy Anderson; his father, Brian J. Kendus and his fiancée Kaitlyn Ritter; sisters Karly Cavanaugh and Skylar Kendus; grandparents Don and MaryJo Figgatt, E. Joseph and Bonnie Kendus, and Cheryl and Curtis Mitchell; aunts and uncles Brian and Shante Figgatt, Brad and Jill (Kendus) Gregory, Steven and Cecilia Kendus, and David and April Renn; and cousins Harrison and Josephine Figgatt, Justin and Brynleigh Figgatt, Lincoln Gregory, Dominique and Gabriella Kendus, and Isabella, Logan, and Matthew Renn. Donovan is also survived by his girlfriend Hannah. The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, Virginia. Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, New Castle, DE with interment at Gracelawn Memorial Park. Thelma Lucille Taylor Smart, age 92, of Littleton, N.C. passed away January 6, 2019. She is the daughter of the late Jesse and Bettie Taylor. She is preceded in death by her husband, Perry Woodrow Smart, Sr.; her sister, Lula Maye Taylor Hall; and her brothers, John Richard Taylor, Talbott Milton Taylor, Jesse Benjamin Taylor, Jr., Robert Lincoln Taylor, Claude Wesley Taylor, Eugene Hampton Taylor, Raymond Beane Taylor and William David Taylor. She is survived by her two children, Debra L. Smart and Perry Woodrow Smart, Jr. and his wife Deborah; her grandchildren, Brian Smart and wife Carly, Bradley Smart and wife Hattie and Krystle Smart and fiancé Brett Werblow; her great grandchildren, Eleanor Elizabeth Smart, Brian Woodrow “Rowe” Smart, Jr. and Sawyer Rodgers Smart; her sister, Mary Elizabeth Taylor Creasey; and numerous nieces and nephews. James Guy Britt, Sr.

James Guy Britt Sr., age 84, of Alberta, Va. departed this life on January 3rd, 2019. He founded Britt Trucking Co. in 1961. He is survived by his loving friend, Rosemarie Roberts of McKenney; his sons, Donald Britt, and wife Judy of Alberta and James G. Britt Jr. of Alberta and his daughter Ceretha D. Byrd of Chesterfield, formally of Alberta. Mr. Britt is also survived by two grandsons, Ryan W. Britt and wife Lindsay of Alberta and Adam S. Britt and wife Amber of Alberta; his two granddaughters Jessica A. Britt of Alberta and Chelsea L. Britt of Alberta; and three great-granddaughters, Tatum, Presley and Emmerson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Sadie Clarke Britt; his step mother, Edna H. Britt; three brothers, Dunford, I.L., and Gerald Wayne Britt; and his sister, Mary Gill Radford. James was a lifelong member of Trinity St. Mark's church. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville. Mary Esther Stamper Turner, age 70, of Lawrenceville, VA, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband, George B. Turner; father, Walter O.Stamper, and brother, Tracy O. Stamper. Mary is survived by her mother, Ruby R. Stamper; daughter, Melissa “Kay” Turner Baird; son, George “Cotton” W. Turner, Sr.; grandchildren, G.W. Turner, Jr., Sara Anne Turner, Ryan Thomas Baird, and Jackson Matthew Reynolds; and great-grandchildren, Hailey Brooke Turner, Angela Faye Abronski, and Kegan Michael Turner.
